Adventures with Dad! part one

I am a lucky girl! I got to spend last weekend adventuring around with my dad. He arrived Saturday at noon, I picked him up at the airport and took him back to apartment #201 where I left him with 1: walking directions to the nearest grocery store 2: walking directions to the beach and 3: a crock-pot full of taco soup. I headed to the theatre to do two shows and he adventured around Long Beach. I did tell him where the Hunger Games sat on my book shelf and by the time he flew home to Kalispell he had finished book one.
Sunday we woke up and sang half of the chorus of Jesus Christ is Risen Today A-a-a-a-a-le-e-lu-u-ia and made HUCKLEBERRY Pancakes for breakfast. Mmmmm good! We then headed down to Costa Mesa via the Pacific Coast Highway, the sun was shinning and the beaches were filling up fast. We got to the theatre and walked around a bit - I showed him the pond where we (some stage managers/crew) like to hang out when we have long breaks - it is a duck pond that has benches, shade and isn't to far from the theatre. We then thought about getting some ice cream so we walked across to South Coast Plaza headed for the Haagen Daz Ice Cream Parlor and to our surprise the only thing open was Sears. So it turned into a productive reading afternoon for Dad while I ran the matinee of The Prince of Atlantis. After the first show we headed to T.G.I.Friday's for supper - their bulletin board said it was happy hour all day Sunday and again it was within walking distance to the theatre so we figured what could be better? We were seated just in time to see Bubba Watson win the 2012 Masters - or at least a replay of it. No ham for our Easter dinner but it was still pretty good. We finished up supper and headed back to the theatre, this time Dad got to see the show. Our second show on Sunday is always and interesting event. It is the last show in an 8 show week so anything can happen. I think it was actually a pretty good run to see. I've worked on other shows where Sundays were just terrible but from my perspective I think it was a good one to watch - you'll have to ask him what he thought of it. After the show I gave him a tour backstage and introduced him to some of the people I work with and we headed back to #201. We each had a cocktail and watched the news before we headed to bed with the idea that we were headed south to the San Diego area for our Monday adventure.
We got up Monday and packed a cooler with some snacks, two cokes and water. Grabbed long sleeve shirst just in case it cool, sunscreen, sunglasses and of course the cameras. We jumped in the Honda, turned on my Garmin GPS and headed south on the PCH not really sure where we were going, just that we were going. We drove through the little Orange County beach side towns and made a spur of the moment decision to stop at Crystal Cove State Park. We parked the car and headed down a boardwalk that also led to a beach access point. It was a pretty nice area. We made it down to the beach and hiked around checking out the exposed tide pools and watched the pelicans and other various bird life chasing waves and enjoying the ocean. It was fun to explore even though the signs pretty specifically said you weren't supposed to touch or move anything - a rule many people chose to ignore as I watched little kids pick up hermit crabs and turn over rocks to see what was beneath them. We were both a little surprised that we didn't see any star fish or sea anemones but we did see lots of shells and hermit crabs. Here are some pictures from the first part of our adventure at Crystal Cove State Park:

A view of the Pacific Ocean from the board walk

Getting closer to the ocean - it was a pretty steep gain in elevation from the water to where we parked the car, we eventually got to some steps that went down the side of the cliff to the beach

SEA LIFE!

Cute little bird guy that was more than happy to pose for a few photos - this one is my favorite with the wave crashing in the back ground

Hermit crab

Exposed rock that has been shaped for millions of years by the moving sea water

There is a lot more to our Monday adventure but I figured this was enough for one post so come back tomorrow for an account of our African Safari in Escondido, CA.
